Hi posters and lurkers,

	If your optical drive shows no problems reading and writing DVDs or CDs 
then you are safe.
	My optical drive produced lots of coasters suddenly. To
explain I do library work with SF-LUG among other things.
Doing such work means producing multiple copies of useful tools
like Kali and like Knoppix. And I probably do more copies using
the internal drive than most people using a notebook.
	I got about a half dozen requests for copies of the latest
Knoppix in one week.  I had scheduled and unscheduled activities that
took up a lot of time so I hurried and made those copies.
	This past week the activity level had resolved itself and I
had time spare to test the disks I had made.All but one failed so
I thought I better make them again and the new batch was just as
bad.
	In addition I had downloaded the latest Scientific Linux
live version and it was producing coasters as well.  I checked
the local shop's advertisement and got a new Samsung external
USB 2.0 drive.  All but one of the Knoppix disks booted and tested
Ok on the new external drive so did the Scientific Linux.
	The Samsung external was on sale and cost me <30 USD while
the replacement for the internal drive will cost about 3X that.
	Until I replace the Notebook with an upgrade I will use
the external drive to create my disks.

	Just thought I would share this tiny bit of information
here.
