Whether you like it or not, even versions of Linux apps from the same
amount of time ago don't work in current Linux versions. The software is
free and you are therefore allowed to upgrade ad nauseum, but in the
world of commercial software, it is expected and normal that new
releases would come out and that they would sustain themselves by
selling new versions of their product.

You're free to adopt the free software model where programmers are never
compensated and where downloading one version of a piece of software
means that you can upgrade for the rest of your life if you get used to
it, but tell yourself that the producers of commercial software who get
compensated also receive an incentive to improve it and it won't be long
before their product is outmatched by the garbage the Linux ecosystem
provided for you.
