Actually it is not nonsense to them. It is a defense against you comming
at them legally for some nonsense. Blame the US litiginous society. 
Also I assume it is free. Why are you objecting to that tiny bit of
inconvenience to get free stuff?

That is of course them, and they should set it up to look for any
traffic, not just http traffic. 

Disconnecting if not used makes sense, since it hogs IP addresses, etc.

Your script sounds like a "simple stupid program" that does what you
want. You have now spent more time asking than it would have cost to
write that script and test it.
