Then afterwards reformat/partion the new drive and use it as spare storage space (eg backups!). When a hard disk fails, it fails. The recording medium is scratched, the rust (iron oxide or ferrite) flakes off, etc. It is IMPOSSIBLE to recover the data there. dd can be told to ignore errors, on blocks, and just go on to the next one. cp cannot.
