I found that I could only copy data off the drive when the drive was within a certain temperature range. First, it had to warm up a bit...then I started copying data off...but when it got too hot, it became unusable. I had to let it cool down then start over. Basically I needed to keep track of where I was and just keep going little by little. It took me a full day but eventually I saved about 95% of the data. I then gave the owner an extreme lecture on backing up data... and I'll be darned he started taking my advice.
