help with mod-curl

I just built a new server and all is well except it appears that 
curl is not supported.
apt-get reports that "curl is already the newest version"
phpinfo does not show curl as a module
I tried php5enmod curl and got:
WARNING: Module curl ini file doesn't exist under 
/etc/php5/mods-available

I know I am missing a step.
