*I* haven't seen the code, either.  Please note the wording of my initial post:
     "What are the most conservative, *practical* expectations I can
     make living in x86 real mode:"

expectation:  a strong belief that something will happen or be the
               case in the future

Had I a *choice* in defining the implementation, I would have asked what
POSSIBILITIES were available to me in making that choice.  *THAT* is a
question to which I can easily get an answer without relying on folks'
"experiences".
