Device sat in a hard-to-access location and had pretty extreme
environmental conditions (heat, vibration, etc.).  The traditional
T's (or F's if you preferred that orientation) just weren't very good
at long term reliability.  So, the physical connections were "adjusted"
to more appropriately address those needs.

I'd assume you could still hack together a suitable PHY. (?)
Not sure how *economical* it would be, though...
