how are you getting there, and trying to get back?

Has the screensaver cut in while you were 'away' needing the space bar 
to be pressed?

They aren't.
they represent different outputs being sent to the same monitor. They 
can and do exist entirely independently.

Not really. I only use them to stop X to tinker with it. Otherwise I use 
a console in a window.

Indeed. Because they usually can, even if its means stopping and 
starting the display manager

Look at the process tree to see if display manager is still running.
