That assumes that plain char is signed, and that EOF is equal to -1.
Both are commonly true, but neither is guaranteed.
Worse, given `char c = 0xfe;`, isalpha(c) has undefined behavior if char
is signed and CHAR_BIT==8.

I think the idea was that isalpha() accepts any value returned by
getchar(). But I agree that that's not particularly useful.
