It's true that the later standards have added more features.  That
doesn't necessarily mean that stringently avoiding those features makes
programming easier.

And in particular, C99 *dropped* some features of C90, specifically the
"implicit int" rule, which allowed calls to functions with no visible
declaration.  You recently ran into a problem because of that.
