You're right. Here's a copy/paste for everyone:

About Freecode

The Freecode site has been moved to a static state effective June 18,
2014 due to low traffic levels and so that folks will focus on more
useful endeavors than site upkeep.
The site contents have been retained in this static state as a
continued path to access the linked software, much of which is on
self-hosted servers and would be difficult to find otherwise.
Developers seeking hosting or ability to promote their Open Source
software should consider SourceForge, as much of the Freshmeat-listed
software currently uses that site.

Freecode has been the Web's largest index of Linux, Unix and
cross-platform software, and mobile applications. Thousands of
applications, which are preferably released under an open source
license, were meticulously cataloged in the Freecode database, but
links to new applications and releases are no longer being added. Each
entry provides a description of the software, links to download it and
to obtain more information, and a history of the project's releases, so
readers can keep up-to-date on the latest developments.

I guess "freezing" the site instead of taking it off line is better
than nothing, but not much. Imagine a "software news site" that
doesn't update - what's the point?

Time for the community to screen scrape it, set up a new site, and live
happily ever after, the way it was intended. I miss Freshmeat back
when it was called Freshmeat. Selling this kind of thing to
corporations is a recipe for eventual site death. I'm kind of tired of
this crap. And yes, I agree - doesn't bode well for Slashdot, either.
What will they do there - freeze the content and stop taking new
submissions? That would be funny.
