Java's was *originally* designed (with the name "Oak") for interactive
television. Its use in web browsers came later.
Calling it interpreted is a bit of an oversimplification. Java is
compiled to Java byte code, which is then executed by a JVM. Other
languages can be compiled to Java byte code, and at least in principle
you could (I think) have an implementation of the Java language that
doesn't use Java bytecode or the JVM.
In a sense it's a pity that the byte code format and the virtual machine
have "Java" in their names.
