And if x isn't null, the elements of x might not be null pointers;
there's no guarantee that a null pointer is represented as
all-bits-zero.  If you're satisfied with portability only to
systems where null pointers *are* all-bits-zero, you can do that,
but I'd suggest at least documenting it.  Or you can use malloc()
and then set each element to NULL in a loop.
