I was thinking more along the lines of:

unsigned i;

for (i = 0; i < n; i += 1)
{
   /*...*/
}
______________________________

;^)

So, wrt "01" and a transformation of "01" =>
"0101", then this would be 2^n number of
replacements:

01 = seed
0101 = 2^0 transformations
01010101 = 2^1 transformations
0101010101010101 = 2^2 transformations
... = 2^n transformations

Think of iterating an L-system. You generally
want to stop at some point?
