My first encounter was with a Sinclair QL port of MicroEmacs around 1989, it was much more powerful than any other text editor available for that platform. There was no on-line help, but I printed the manual (using a dot matrix printer, naturally) which became one of my most read manuals. When a few years later I tried various Linuxen, finding the full-on Emacs was a pleasure, though I had to use mostly Windoze for several years. Finding a decent port of Emacs for Windoze probably delayed my move back to Linux by at least a year, such was the functionality it brought to Windoze.
