Android's Linux and main tree Linux principal differences were mainly wakelock, earlysuspend, Android security model, another frame buffer and drivers. None of these involved heavy modifications to Linux. All these were additions to Linux that did not replace, remove or significantly change any of the existing code. They introduced some duplication with existing features and that was one of the problem raised by the Linux maintainers. Several of the Android features were applied to Linux but due to poor maintenance/interest from Google were later removed. If Linux was "heavily modified" by these patches then it would be very unlikely that the patches would have been merged in the first place and later removed.
