The fact that theoldreader.com is one of the biggest beneficiaries of Google's decision to abandon their much loved Reader (rss reader software) has just a bit to do with the positive viewpoint. But I tend to agree with them: RSS is really useful and a large part of what I do on the 'Net starts with RSS feeds. Sometimes I think the only app I need on my smartphone is a good RSS reader - no need for an individual app for each news outlet (even if that's what they'd apparently prefer I do!). I reluctantly downloaded a NYT app but even that annoys me beyond belief, and if NYT is offering RSS feeds, they're making them damned hard to find. The Guardian offers an app but what's the point if they're also offering good RSS feeds? So much of the new tech is simply more controlling, less useful versions of existing tech. </lawn>.
