I really like the idea of mesh networking but for it to work there has to be some sort of anti-leeching technology to go with it, or else that one guy who just *HAS* to get the latest torrents will blow out the whole mesh to do it. The other major problem I see is that the poor folks running the gateways to the internet will be shut down with extreme prejudice. There is also the issue of rural mesh networking - how do you achieve any sort of decent signal coverage when you have maybe one node per square mile, or one per dozen or hundred square miles? These are all technological hurdles which can be overcome with the exception of gating to the internet. That problem is political and would take some serious changes in the way the USA operates to be feasible. The ISPs would attack you for 'sharing' and the FCC would block your use of the spectrum right quick. Meanwhile, there is amateur radio, which has had functional mesh networking for decades, and thanks to a new FCC rule that is likely to pass, we will have higher data rates on HF as long as emissions stay within a 3 KHz bandwidth (FINGERS CROSSED!).
