I remember buying just the bare "bigboard"
from a surplus mail order catalogue,
with schematics, ROMS
and instructions on how to build it up from there.

I was not comfortable with assembling such a large system
since a lot of time, effort & money (in parts) was at risk.
My patience was rewarded, for Xerox surplus later sold
entire 802-II systems (main unit with monitor, keyboard) for $100.
I later acquired several more for cheap or free
at the good-old NJ Trenton Computer Fest.

Sadly, I never had enough bench space for them
and gave them all away to a fellow who lamented giving up his.

As to the Wyse-50, I too held onto mine
because I find it more comfortable to use than VT220 or 320.
It tilts and the kybd is not too wide or heavy.

I still have Muppet lunchboxes to someday re-create that
BYTE cover of the SB180 in the lunchbox with floppy drives.

I have 2 SB180s.
One I bought already assembled in a PC-clone case.
Sorry, I forgot the kind person who sold it to me cheap.
And a wire-wrapped SB180 from Alan Strassberg.
I still have not found a project worthy of it :-/

That sounds really retro for the 8" floppy drives
yet turbo-charged with the 64180 (256k DRAM?)

I found Z80 CPUs hiding in many devices:
smart modems, terminal servers, SCSI controllers,
intelligent serial ports, AppleTalk interface cards.

It's so hard being a Zilog advocate after the IXSYS merger/takeover.
At least Captain Zilog's back!
