 Recently the Chinese manufacturers have been attempting to ratify 
connector standards for 'phone internals with the intention being for 
them to offer something more akin to a desktop computer. Say you want to 
upgrade the wireless connectivity...unplug the old module...buy a higher 
spec. module and plug that in. The camera would be an obvious upgrade 
option and so on. I suspect that waterproofing would suffer in such 
devices and the initial cost would be higher  but it's an interesting 
option...maybe not for your next 'phone but how about the one after the 
one after that?
