For a while I used Seamonkey which seemed to work well.  It's the new 
name for the old Mozilla suite.  There are also several command line 
newsreaders, tin, nn, and lynx also has news reading functionality.  
Some people also like to use leafnode, which I have only heard about 
but never used myself.

Poking around a bit, it seems that other Knode users have similar
