After reading your message, I think I've learned something significant.

LaCross has a charger that will charge 4 NiMH or NiCd  AA or AAAs on 
independent circuits.  You can choose 200, 500, or 700ma, but it's in 
pulses of 800, 2000, or 2800ma.  When it reaches the voltage drop, it 
switches to a timed trickle charge as Panasonic recommends. It monitors 
temperature.  It will recondition a cell by cycling it until the 
capacity stops increasing.  It will check capacity, which I've done with 
a clock and a resistor in the past.

With great NiMH cells and chargers available, I'll try to avoid products 
with built-in rechargeable batteries.
