stunnel 4.53 on i686-pc-linux-gnu platform
Compiled with OpenSSL 1.0.1 14 Mar 2012
man stunnel
-n proto
Negotiate SSL with specified protocol
currently supported: smtp, pop3, nntp
So
stunnel -n smtp -c -r smtp.gmail.com:587
responds with
220 mx.google.com ESMTP q5sm100027972eep.11 - gsmtp
Thus you need to check which version (I suspect an ancient out of date one)
of stunnel you are trying to use and refer to the manual page.
However you appear to have missed the fact that I was directing you
to comment #1 which explains how to use swaks and not stunnel
for testing, viz
swaks -s SMTPSERVERNAME -p ESMTPS –ehlo MYFQDN -au USERNAME -ap USERPASSWD -t TOADDR -f FROMADDR
replacing all of the UPPERCASE strings with values appropriate
to your case.
