I would say, that actually (home or personal) computers were the BIG step.

Communications via the various networks is nice and useful, but wouldn't 
be possible without programmable devices.

In the late 80th personal computers became availlable for the masses and 
have created a totally new environment, on which things like internet or 
UseNet are based.

A smartphone is actually a miniature (personal) computer with very high 
performance, that can, besides of tons of other things, also make phone 
calls.
