The C11 footnote 84 says that

   a[i] = i;

is fine.  It doesn't mention whether or not 'i' is volatile.  6.5.16p3 
("Assignment operators") has that "The evaluations of the operands are 
unsequenced."

It might've been nice if the footnote had mentioned 'volatile', or had a 
declaration for 'i' that excluded it.
