Sounds good to me. What I hear a lot is that inverters generally put out
like 1800v unloaded and about 800v when the lamp is lit. So a value
similar is what I would expect.

It could be like some switching supplies draw current unloaded, while
some truly draw nothing at all.

Yes that is my understanding too. Although I suspect at some point no
matter how much voltage you feed it, it just won't ionize.

Sadly, manufactures nowadays keep these under lock and key. They seem to
be really worried that their competitors stealing their designs.

eBay is usually a good place to find used working parts. For some things
anyway. Like these Gateway M465, zillions have come off lease and I can
buy perfectly working ones all day long for about $50 a piece off of
eBay.

I don't think that is always true. For example most laptops if you close
the lid, the lamp turns off. But I believe the display itself is still
functioning. Although I haven't experimented to test this or anything.
Another test would be to have Windows turn off the display. Then with a
flashlight, spotlight, or even sunlight you should be able to make out
part of the image if it is still functioning. Anything white is very
easier to see. Like having notepad or something on the screen should
make this much easier to check.

My old Toshiba 2595XDVD laptops from 1999 have a hotkey to turn off the
backlighting on the display. So at least some laptops it is possible
that it could be a key press away. I don't think it sticks if you reboot
though. As I believe it defaults to being on when powered up.

Yes they do exist on motherboards. I can't say they always exist on
every design though. But they are indeed common enough.

This is the chip on the inverter, right? I haven't found anything here
either yet. But I'll continue checking.
