When I looked at my gcc -O3 code, it seemed to use the longer form, but then 
it also inlined the function and didn't have an issue with saving/restoring 
registers.

But this is a good point: realising these signed values will only ever be 
positive, so they can therefore be treated as unsigned values but with an 
unused top bit. That's the kind of extra knowledge that can give assembly 
programmers an edge over most compilers (with some exceptions like your 
gcc).

However even using this short form, which made my code 6% faster, it was 
slower than my gcc (based on my original simple code; using inlining and 
some unrolling, it might be marginally faster).
