By definition. Therefore my compiler emits a warning and does its best (as all other compilers do) and produces exactly the same result as most other compilers do. I can't understand how you come to "overflow". There is nowhere an "overflow" and I did not use that word at all. It is just that the value can't be represented in the destination object. Try putting 53765 into an 8 bit char... or a complex number into a float...
