The connections on the vga socket are like what you're used to, only smaller. The BGA of the video chip has hundreds of tiny solder balls hidden completely under the chip. There is zero access to them. Only option is to heat the board and the chip to cause the solder to melt and hopefully "reflow" creating a good connection. There are other things that could go wrong in the path from graphics memory to the external vga socket. A cracked resistor could cause the same symptom. Take it apart and inspect all the parts/connections in that area.
