One is faced with that "holy portability" (and "performance trumps elegance") thing even when one need not be. That's fine if you need it, but if you don't, you don't. Not that platform-provided libraries are a panacea, but that I'd rather build something on top of that than on top of language-provided libraries because I feel that language-provided libraries are not adequate as the top-level of abstraction and if I have to build something on top of something anyway, I prefer to build on top of the platform API.
