Hi,
Is there a built-in function which returns the numeric value of a string 
(like ToString but inverse).  Currently I use mine function toNumber:

  ch = StringToStream[timeStr];
  timeNum = Read[ch, Number];
  Close[ch];

but I suspect there is easier way.
