     It gets back to what I mentioned before: If you know something
important about your allocations, and you can think of a way to
exploit that knowledge, then you may be able to write code that is
better specialized for your allocation patterns than general-purpose
malloc().

     But in your original post you wrote "I am talking about general
purpose applications," which can be read as "I have no exploitable
knowledge about the memory usage patterns."  In that case, the issue
collapses to "Can I, myself, write a better general-purpose malloc()
package than the vendors' experts?"  As I also pointed out, this is
sometimes possible when the vendor has given the job to tyros and not
to experts.  Nowadays I suspect such lame vendors are not exactly
thick upon the ground; in fact, the one I know of has disappeared.
