Trading floppies didn't work at all for moving data between different types of computers. About 35 years ago, I was running a BBS on my Apple IIe. While the BBS was running, I couldn't use the computer for anything else. To free it up for my own use again, I pieced together my first x86 box with a fast modem (14.4 kbps vs. 2400 bps in the IIe), a big hard drive (120 MB IDE vs. 40 MB SCSI in the IIe), and a 286. With DR DOS and DESQview, it even had some limited but usable multitasking capability. I put one of those 2-way rotary switchboxes on the IIe's serial port to switch it between the printer and a serial port on the 286. ZMODEM transfers between the two machines ran reliably at 19.2 kbps, which would transfer a whole floppy's worth (140K) of data in a little over a minute. The completely different format between the two machines (not just ProDOS vs. FAT filesystems, but also GCR vs. MFM, single-sided vs. double-sided, double-density vs. high-density) would've precluded just shuffling disks between the two.
