She almost surely made an attack fully aware of the racist tone of the 
insult. Her back pedaling (at least initially, I have not followed the 
story) was not even tied to the idea that it was not.

She made a racist comment and it cost her. I have no sympathy for her on 
that.

Personal attacks from those who troll show their own insecurity. They 
cannot use reason to show the message to be wrong so they try to feel 
somehow superior by attacking the messenger.

They cling to their attacks and ignore the message time and time again.
