What do you want? The force of gravity is inversely proportional to the 
square of the distance. If you have two objects of the same mass in a 
gravitational field, one at distance R + r and one at distance R - r, 
then one experiences a force of k/(R + r)^2 and the other experiences a 
force of k/(R - r)^ 2, where k is a constant of proportionality and R is 
the distance from the source of the field.

If the two objects are attached so that they cannot accelerate at 
different rates, then they experience a force between them of

k[1/(R + r)^2 - 1/(R - r)^2)] [*]

which is the tidal force.
