  I heard of ropes and the piece table, both with specific
  advantages and disadvantages. One could separate the UI
  from the engine by an interface and then allow the user 
  to select the engine as late as at runtime, like

myedit -ui=vim -engine=ropes myfile.txt

  . Something like this is done in MySQL where one can select
  the storage engine at runtime.
