This isn't Ub, but this group is more sane than the alt.os.linux group 
activity.  I may have to take this to antiX or mepis forum, but I prefer 
ng/s.

I'm trying to get antiX 16 wifi up on an Acer AO722 (cpu AMD C-60, 4G 
ram) which has  wifi Atheros chipset and driver ath9k.  The enhanced 
XFCE interface of MX-15 works fine for the wifi.  The antiX graphical 
tool wpagui isn't working properly ie its adapter field menu is 
unpopulated.  It also has an atheros ethernet which isn't connected to 
the lan.  The ethernet is AR8152 (driver atlic) and the wifi chip is AR9485.

When I try to run ceni from antix internet menu, I get an error message: 
invalid desktop entry file, /usr/share/applications/ceni-desktop.  When 
I look to see if ceni is installed using synaptic, there is no entry, 
and ceni from the command line says command not found.  (But) When I use 
locate, there are all kinds of ceni files, but they are absent when I 
try to find them with the SpaceFM file manager with the hidden files 
unhidden.  That baffles me.

When I boot the antiX on a system with ethernet connectivity, it 
connects automatically and has a notification icon.  On the Acer, that 
icon registers no ethernet connectivity; no wifi mentioned. (Corrected 
see below)

I've booted this antiX on 2 different wifi-only systems, because 
sometimes in the past this atheros wifi has acted 'funky' I think 
because it reports itself as ethernet inconsistently; but I get the same 
problems on the alternate laptop.

It has a wpa_supplicant, but I don't know how to use it manually. I 
don't think the supplicant is going to help me until I get the wifi card 
recognized properly.

It shows in

sudo lspci -v | grep Net

Correction to ethernet/wifi notification icon:

I used

sudo ifconfig wlan0 up

... which caused another icon to appear which annunciates no wlan0 
connectivity like the ethernet, but its only function Repair doesn't help
