Not just other EU countries -- Barroso and Juncker also made it quite clear that an independent Scotland would have to get its affairs in order and apply formally for membership. This process can take a long time, especially with a new country that has a very wobbly financial sector and no proven track record. > > Having said that, England is quite hostile to Scotland anyway > and, as noted, is liable also to leave the EU itself - > with Scotland. And this wouldn't open the way for Scotland > separately to join the EU because we'd still be opposed by > Spain and Greece. I do not believe England is hostile to Scotland. We are simply getting rather tetchy about the constant shrill noises and the privileges extorted by the threat of secession. Is it English or Scottish hostility that has English students in Scotland paying fees whereas Scottish youngsters get free tuition? When British tax money is spent by tens of billions to rescue a Scottish bank and British tax payers subsidise Scottish government largesse to the tune of more than £2,000 per Scottish head every year, are we not justified in getting just a bit cheesed off at the permanent whining and posturing by the SNP? > > On the other hand, Spain and Greece have serious economic > problems with their own EU membership. They currently have enough problems of their own without trying to integrate the Six Counties. Not to mention that they are definitely unkeen to call down on their own heads another terrorist war -- a certainty, because the NI Protestants are not going to take any such transfer of sovereignty lying down.
