  Using bash on trixie, I get

$x=" a "
$echo $x
a

$echo "$x"
 a

$echo ".$x."
. a .

$eval echo \$x
a

$eval echo "\$x"
a

$eval echo ".\$x."
. a .

  . So, the behavior of IFS probably is due to the dots "." used.
