Do you know assembly language? If so, do you know 65816 assembly?

Apple published a technical library for the Apple IIgs. You can buy these
books used thru Amazon.com or you can find PDF copies of them on some Apple
II web sites.

So the answer to your question of where to start: you need to start reading.
