Hard to believe that someone so wrapped-up in his "visual" BASIC world 
would actually (try to) challenge Linux's text-processing capabilities.

Text handling has always been one of Unix's main strengths.  For the 
time, the basic IPO model using text was innovative...though it did take 
them a little while to figure out what to use for the pipe character.

So we can safely ignore those who troll the group with their homework 
assignments.

Furthermore, though, you find people -- possibly you, and certainly NT 
zealots -- who think that "text" is all that can flow through a 
pipeline.  And in the past, this was mentioned to compare and contrast 
shell programming with "PowerShell".

Of course, pipes can carry more than text: they can carry a video stream, 
an audio stream, image stream, or any stream of bytes.  This makes tools 
like "sox" all that much more useful.

And if you need more than one pipe to combine or split data?  Tada, Linux 
has named pipes.
