My reading of early American history is that many colonist groups came to the New World precisely in order to establish a "New Jerusalem", territories where they could establish the unquestioned rule of their particular flavour of religion. Puritans did not come to America to enjoy plurality and living cheek by jowl with Catholics, Anglicans or Quakers -- they came to found communities that were ruled totally by the strictures and doctrines of their faith. To this end, they did expel fellow Christians who followed a different path and even executed some for daring to believe in a different way. I'd also note that if the American colonies were founded by "radicals and liberals who left Europe to escape the conservatism of status quo European institutions such as divine monarchy, class immobility, and state religion", they took their own sweet time about acting on those beliefs. A century and more between escaping Europe and doing something about the rule of Old Europe in the New World does not exactly speak for a burning need....
