As a gravitational wave passes an object, different parts of that object 
are subject to different forces. A non rigid object will undergo a 
temporary change of size as a result. That can be exploited to do work, 
so energy is definitely being transferred.

In practice, of course, the amount of work done by a practical system is 
very small, but that doesn't invalidate the argument.
