Relativistic contraction is part of attempt by popular science authors 
to explain in words something that can really only be properly explained 
using mathematics. In the process, they sow much misunderstanding of 
what relativity is about.

Nothing gets shortened, squeezed, squashed, or whatever, as a result of 
relativity. That's not what it says. But you really have to study the 
math to grasp it.
