Before Freon, home refrigerators used sulphur dioxide and methyl chloride. I 
believe ammonia was used for commercial installations such as grocery 
stores.

Sulphur dioxide was also used as a fumigant to kill insects, nasty stuff.  I 
don't know what other properties methyl chloride has.

On my first trip to the UK, in the late 60's, one thing I noticed was the 
relative lack of air conditioning compared to the US. In general I thought 
London was like a time machine.
