Mainly business.  Companies like pushing their own tools, especially 
when they lock you into their platform.  Microsoft needed something to 
compete with Java to avoid becoming just another second tier JVM hosting 
platform.  To their credit they are now firmly behind the C++ 
standardisation process and promote C++ along with C# as a preferred 
language.

JavaScript is more than just a web page programming language.  The 
Google V8 JavaScript changed that.  See https://nodejs.org/en/ for a 
server side environment.
