Nope, I'm just addressing what you said - in particular, "Having
everything turn to custard (aka 'losing the lot') is a user experience I
wish to avoid". Connecting a hard drive to a computer and clicking a
button on the screen both prevents data loss (the only user experience
you seem to acknowledge exists) *and* is a much better user experience
than all of this nonsense:

helping you, because it was (and still is) obvious you are only here to
