If you don't want a full office suite, I think your best bet is probably 
going to be 'gnumeric' - a more or less stand alone spreadsheet - it will 
export to CSV.  You might try 'xls2csv' from the 'catdoc' package or 
cobble something together with 'xlhtml'.
