Generally, I though, that sqlite normally stored strings in UTF-8 format (I think it can use UTF-16 though). I personally would generally convert a string storing UTF-16/UCS-2 data into an array of uint16_t if at all possible, just because it is closer to what is really going on (or maybe wchar if I knew it was the right size). This isn't always possible for data coming from outside source. If these are coming from VB, then they may have actually started like that.
